There are few places I love to be more during the summer than around a campfire. There’s something about sitting around a campfire that makes people want to talk, laugh, sing and enjoy each other’s company. Building a fire and hanging out has always been my favorite part of camping trips. Growing up, I always went camping with my best friend and her family. We’d have a campfire every night and every night, my friend and I would stay up way too late, sharing stories about boys or school or our hopes and dreams. It’s almost like there’s something magical about a campfire that brings out the fun in everyone.
We’re not able to have a fire pit/plate in our backyard, thanks to HOA regulations. {I think if we did have one, we’d be out there every single night} But last month, we were at my in-laws house and all of the kids bought my father-in-law a fire pit for Father’s Day. We were all bursting at the seams to get it set up and get a fire going.
We sat around the fire sharing stories, listening to music, laughing and enjoying our time as a family. Bunny and Bubba finally learned the art of making the perfect S’more. {although, TH and I still debate over which is better: a perfectly browned marshmallow or a burnt one…feel free to weigh in here}
It was a perfect summer night. We didn’t need a TV or iPad. The kids were sticky and dirty. They ran barefoot in the dark chasing fireflies. No one needed to check their email or take a turn in Words with Friends. It’s like a campfire can remind us of simpler times and show us all we need is each other to have a great time {S’mores help, too}.
